Andy Jenks (aka Andy Spaceland) sold his bike and bought a guitar when he was 13. He went to art school in Newport, making experimental sound and films, played drums in a local punk band, and started DJing in the legendary ‘TJ’s’ nightclub in 1985, playing electro, punk and reggae.

Andy moved to Bristol in 1989 and immediately involved himself in Bristol bass music culture. His first release, as Sugarboat, was a collaboration with Rudy Tambala (A R Kane) and was a Melody Maker single of the week.

He joined Statik Sound System, releasing a number of records on Cup of Tea Records, then his band Alpha signed to Massive Attack’s ‘Melankolic’ label.

Alpha released a number of seminal records, including their debut ‘Come From Heaven’, which was voted album of the year in the French Magic magazine in 1997. They toured with Massive Attack in the UK and Europe, and collaborated with and/or remixed many other acts, including Madonna, Coldplay, Horace Andy, Jarvis Cocker, Grizzly Bear, and Robert Plant. Andy also became one of Massive Attack’s tour DJ’s on the Mezzanine tour, playing across Europe and the US.

Since leaving Alpha, he has become a collaborator and writer/producer on many projects.

He is a member of the band 5 Billion in Diamonds with LA producer Butch Vig and UK DJ James Grillo. They have released two critically acclaimed LP’s, which features a stellar list of singers and guest contributors.

He is one half of electro dub duo Ree-Vo, with Bristol rapper T. Relly. Their first album was in Norman Record’s top ten hip-hop records of 2022. They have collaborated with The Bug, Dalek, Rob Smith, and US urban artist Shepard Fairey.

He is a member of the band The Flies, with long time collaborators Sean Cook and Damon Reece (Spiritualized, Massive Attack), and Alex Lee (Massive Attack, Goldfrapp).

He has released singles on DJ Die’s ‘Gutterfunk’ label with White Bully.

He has remixed, DJed for, and made a video for Elizabeth Fraser (The Cocteau Twins, Massive Attack).

He was a long time collaborator of the legendary singer Mark Stewart (The Pop Group) and contributed a number of tracks for Mark’s posthumous LP ‘The Fateful Symmetry’. One track, remixed by Adrian Sherwood, features on Pay it all Back Volume 12.

He worked out of ex-BBC studio Christchurch Studios for many years, also composing music for short films and theatre shows. He recorded, composed for, and sound designed a huge number of audio dramas, working with directors such as Marilyn Leconte, Julie Becket, Jonquil Panting, and Marilyn Imrie, and companies including BBC New Creatives and Big Finish.

He has had music used in many films and TV shows, including Big Little Lies, Un Minute de Silence, and East New York.

He has directed, filmed, and edited more than thirty single camera guerilla music videos for his music projects.

He continues to DJ, playing everything from grubby dance music, to obscure lounge and easy.

He has recently, with Butch Vig, composed the soundtrack to the upcoming feature film ‘The Third Parent’, with a US cinema release on January 22nd 2027.

He is married to the singer Helen White, and currently lives and works from his studio in a remote forest in the middle of nowhere.
